Economic Development and Opportunity in District 1
Tuesday January 27, Space Connect had the pleasure of hosting an intimate fireside chat with City Commissioner Cathleen Ward of District 1. The room was filled primarily with Space Connect SBEs, local residents, nonprofit organizations, and community representatives who are all invested in the future of District 1.
Moderated by Jeff Harrington, Esq., the conversation centered on development, construction, and economic growth in District 1. Commissioner Ward walked through how the district is structured, how decisions are made at the city level, and what major redevelopment and construction projects are underway or on the horizon. A key part of the discussion focused on how local vendors and small businesses can position themselves to participate in these projects through readiness, certification, and capacity building.
What stood out most was Commissioner Ward’s approachable and engaging style. She broke down complex city processes in a way that was easy to understand, creating a conversation that felt informative, interactive, and entertaining. That tone helped keep the focus on opportunity and made it easier for business owners in the room to connect city planning with real, practical outcomes.
As the conversation evolved, it expanded to the broader issues that shape the district’s ability to grow and prosper. Topics such as public safety, homelessness, and affordable living were discussed in the context of how they affect development, workforce stability, and long term economic health in District 1. These realities are part of the environment in which businesses operate, and addressing them is essential to sustaining growth.
At Space Connect, we believe economic development works best when local businesses are informed early and given a real seat at the table. Fireside chats like this create the space for honest conversations, and stronger connections between local leadership, small businesses, and the community.
