When Government Listens: A Conversation with County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo at Space Connect

On January 22, 2026, Space Connect, together with the Office of Small Business Development of Palm Beach County, hosted a sold-out Fireside Chat with County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo. Moderated by Estrella Parada, CEO and Founder of Space Connect and Space Connect Foundation, the evening brought together local business owners, construction professionals, community leaders, and advocates for an honest and timely conversation about leadership, opportunity, and the future of Palm Beach County.

From the opening moments, the conversation moved beyond titles and into the story behind the role. Administrator Abruzzo shared his path into public service, beginning at just 24 years old with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and evolving through years of legislative and financial leadership. His message was clear: public service is not about power, it’s about responsibility, stewardship, and showing up for the community.

As the discussion unfolded, Administrator Abruzzo offered a clearer picture of what county government actually touches in everyday life. Beyond taxes and permits, the County oversees operations, infrastructure, services, and a $9 billion budget tied to real projects and real people. When asked what keeps him up at night, his answer centered on responsibility, ensuring public dollars are managed efficiently and in ways that deliver meaningful impact.

A pivotal moment of the evening centered on the relationship between government and the business community. Administrator Abruzzo spoke directly to local business owners, emphasizing that his role (and the role of county government) is to support their growth and success.

“I’m here to help you”, he shared. “My success is based on your success”. His message reinforced a clear commitment to partnership, stewardship of public dollars, and creating real opportunities for local businesses to participate in the county’s economic future.

The conversation then turned toward what many in the room were eager to hear: what’s coming next. Administrator Abruzzo outlined several major initiatives shaping the county’s future, including airport expansion, a new convention center, smart vehicle and traffic technology, long-term plans for a sports complex, and efforts to grow NFL Flag Football in the region. These projects represent not just development, but opportunity, especially for local small businesses ready to participate.

A central theme throughout the evening was the importance of certification and access. Administrator Abruzzo emphasized his commitment to improving the county’s vendor portal and building a strong bench of certified local vendors, ensuring that local dollars stay in the local economy.

Certification, he noted, is the gateway for small businesses to compete, grow, and be part of the county’s long-term vision.

The fireside chat concluded with an open dialogue between Administrator Abruzzo and local small business owners, reinforcing the spirit of collaboration that defined the evening. The room buzzed with conversation, connection, and possibility, exactly what Space Connect aims to foster.

The event was a full sell-out and also served as a reminder of what happens when government, business, and community come together with intention. Special thanks to Director Axel Miranda and the Office of Small Business Development of Palm Beach County for their partnership, and to Estrella Parada for guiding a conversation that was both candid and impactful.
